With fanfare unparalleled since Hollywood released the first Harry Potter movie, the Fifty Shades of Grey movie is creating quite the chatter. Based on a book by the same name, it celebrates a man’s sexual control over a young woman. It idealizes sexual manipulation and sadomasochistic sex. And rest assured, scores of teenagers will see this movie allowing its demeaning message to shape their understanding of sex.
So for those of us in ministry, what should our response be? Pitching a spiritual fit produces nothing. How about we turn something destructive into something constructive?
Instead of seeing the movie I encourage you to send $50 to Refuge for Women. It is an amazing ministry that provides a shelter and guidance for women who have been sexually exploited in prostitution, pornography and strip clubs. The Refuge teaches exploited girls how to find healing in Jesus and lead a new life. I personally know the people who run this ministry. They are effective and operate in the highest of integrity.
Let’s turn Fifty Shades of Grey into fifty bucks of green for a ministry worthy of our support.
